2011 Chiles Valley Zinfandel, Frederick Block 9
In 1928, Anton Nichelini planted a block of Zinfandel on his Chiles Valley vineyard and named it after his son Frederick. Some 80 years later, Anton’s great-grandson Joe generously gave us access to what remained from some of the oldest vines in California. Nestled in the Vaca Mountains, they enjoyed a moderate climate well into fall, allowing riper, deeper flavors to develop. Sadly, these old vines have since been retired.
The 2011 vintage has a deep nose of dark chocolate, mocha and blackberry pie fresh from the oven. With a deep, dark fruit core surrounded by baking spices and vanilla, this lush Zinfandel is soft and smooth on the palate with a long, beautifully bright finish. BBQ a pork shoulder and introduce its new best friend.
