2018 Going to California, Trousseau Gris, Russian River Valley

After spending fewer than 30 minutes with Peter Fanucchi we knew three things:

1. He's a true Italian with a big family heritage
2. He has a million stories in his back pocket
3. He is meticulous about the vines he tends

Leaving Lucca, Italy after WWII, Peter's father first found a home in Canada. After a trip to Disneyland with his new wife, he realized that the beauty and promise of California could not be denied. After saving up for several years, he found what would become the Fanucchi-Wood Road Vineyard and bought it in 1972.

Being the true Italians they are, grape-growing ran in the Fanucchi blood. Peter and his father traveled back to Lucca, Italy to visit his grandfather who taught them the nuances of tending a strong vineyard. Back in the states, neighbors joined the effort to plant strong, time-resistant vines. Enter Trousseau Gris.

At a time when Chardonnay was unheard of and Cabernet ruled, planting Trousseau Gris (known then as Gray Riesling) was a risk. Planted by Peter and his father in 1979, the Fanucchi-Wood Road vineyard remains the only standing block of Trousseau Gris in California. Their risk, it seems, most certainly paid off.

The color of a California sunset with the flavor of a warm summer night, this wine will knock you over, blow you away and touch your soul.

It takes a delicate hand and careful winemaking to bring out the best characteristics of this grape. Honored to receive fruit from this famed vineyard, Bertus proved to be its perfect steward.

100% whole cluster, foot-stomped and skin-fermented, this wine was made with an old-school touch and new-school attitude. You'll enjoy aromas of watermelon, yellow peaches, herbal tea and jasmine as a slight tinge of honeysuckle balanced by bright acidity moves across the palate. A near perfect example of a very hard to find varietal.
